Amy and I have finally tied the knot!

After meeting in France 7 years ago in the ski resort of Tignes, and 6 happy years spent in Bansko, we have finally become Mr and Mrs Webb. We are both so happy to have found each other and are so lucky to have so much in common. We are looking forward to welcoming all of you to our chalets as a married couple!

A great event which is now in its third year; the ‘Road To Know where’ Bansko mountain bike downhill competition is an extreme event open to all with BBQ’s and parties occurring through the weekend.

We are also looking forward to the new ‘Drag Mountain Bike North Shore Park’ Free to enter all year in Bansko Park near the square! It offers huge kickers and pump jumps with North Shore style elevated tracks through the trees!

Launching this summer 2011, we are glad to announce unlike most mountain holidays that we are tailoring our summer weeks and programmes to the over 50’s. Our weeks will consist of a hassle free program where you have the choice to be as adventurous as you like or simply relax in the garden. You may wish to soak in the hot tub or enjoy a stroll into the national park to take in the majesty of the mountains, the choice is yours!

We pick you up from the airport in Sofia were you can either enjoy a day in the capital taking in some museums or head straight to the Chalet. The following day can be spent on our tour of the icon museum and church in Bansko. A BBQ will be arranged for the following day in the mountains followed by a trip to Melnik monastery for local wine tasting and a look into the wine cellars buried deep under the Bulgarian mountains! Food is offered at the chalet every night along with breakfast all included in our price. Dobrinishte chair lift will whisk you up to the lake for lunch the following day taking in breathtaking views whilst you enjoy some local food and wine. Our week ends with a farewell meal with cocktails on the balcony at the chalet followed by our complimentary minibus back to the airport for your return flight.

At the end of last year we held our annual ‘White Chalets Bulgarian Wine Tasting’ event which always proves to be popular. With over 40 different Bulgarian wines to choose from, the event ended with red lips and good laughs had by all.

Highlights included the auction where a number of good wines are auctioned off going for nearly £50 per bottle all of which is given to charity. The icing on the cake was how much we actually made; close to £500! With this money, instead of choosing a large charity to donate to, we spoke to some Bulgarian friends who put us in touch with a young 13 year old Bulgarian lad with sever walking disabilities. He spend a lot of time in hospital for various treatments but still manages to get to school everyday with the help of his mother and friends. We met with him and immediately saw a worthy cause to raise money for; buying him a brand new lap top to aide him at school and to spend time on whilst cooped up in hospital. I have included a picture in this post of him with Amy and Tsvety on Christmas day delivering his new gift. He was shy to have two such adorable ladies by his side but he was overjoyed with his new computer.

Good news for all of us here in Bansko, the old T-Bar at the top of the mountain is being replaced with a Chair lift to accompany a new run next to the ‘Board Park’

There will also be a new 6 man Chair Lift to replace the 4 man Chair Lift from the top of the gondola to reduce waiting times.

Finally, Ulen (the company in charge of the mountain) have just bought the old restaurants at Shilingarnica which will be demolished next year to accommodate the second gondolas destination. All good news for the resort and the future of Bansko!

1.   Bulgarian Yogurt: known in Bulgaria as kiselo mlyako. The country’s long and affectionate relationship with yogurt dates back to the Thracians, ancient: inhabitants of Bulgaria when stock-breeders placed sheep’s milk in lambskin bags around their waists and fermented yogurt using their own body heat. Even the word ‘yogurt’ is said to derive from the words for ‘thick’ and ‘milk’ in ancient Thracian. But being credited as the inventor is not Bulgaria’s only source of yogurt pride: it is credited with producing the healthiest yogurt in Europe, thanks to a unique bacteria native to the country.

2.   Bulgarian Honey: Bulgarian honey is famous worldwide for its nutritional and remedial properties. It’s one of the unique things about Bulgaria and terms like “divine elixir”, a “magic of Nature” are often associated with Bulgarian honey. But the significance of this wonder product is much more because of is advantages and it has been used in Ancient East people for its nutritional qualities.

3.   Bulgarian Wine: Those with a taste for the other fine things in life might associate Bulgaria with wine growing. Bulgaria is one of the oldest yet most up-and-coming winemaking regions in the world. Before the fall of the Iron Curtain, all wine produced in Bulgaria went to Russia. Today however, premium wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah as well as the indigenous Mavrud are beginning to emerge into the world market.
Bulgarian Rose Oil: The famous Bulgarian rose-oil, produced in the region of Kazanlak is a component of French and other world-famous perfumes. This rose oil is used in many countries for production of perfumes. You can visit Kazanlak the rose region in May and June to see the most beautiful roses in Europe.

4.   Bulgarian Forests: The Bulgarian forests account for a third of Bulgaria’s land area. The forests of Bulgaria have inestimable global, national, regional, economic, ecological and social importance. Though small in area, Bulgaria ranks third in Europe in biodiversity, with a number of rare and endemic species. More than 700 brown bears, 1,000 wolves, golden jackal, wild cats, common otters, souslik and 37 species of reptiles can be found here, many of which have disappeared from other parts of Europe. In order to protect this diversity, three national parks, 10 nature parks, 55 reserves and 35 maintained reserves have been established.

5.   Bulgarian opera singers : Bulgaria is known for its opera singers. The famous opera bass-singers (Boris Christov and Nickolai Guaurov) and the beautiful soprano Raina Kabaivanska are Bulgarians nationals.

7.   The Rila Cross: The Rila Cross is one of the many unique things in Bulgaria which is a must see when travelling to the country. It’s a wooden cross with 140 microscopic scenes from the Bible featuring more than 1,500 figures; the largest of them is no bigger than a grain of rice. It was carved by the monk Raphail, with a pin on a piece of linden wood for 12 years until he became blind. The Rila Cross can be found in the Rila monastery museum.
